Why is it that dogs today have no respect for order when it comes to paper? when I was younger, I never remember my dogs ravenously tearing up paper. I remember my dogs having manners, being obedient, and generally concentrating on being "Man's Best Friend."
Not so today. Charlie (my precious Yorkie) turned 1 year old on June 10. I have looked forward to this milestone in the hopes that he might slow down just a little. But that has not been the case. He loves to tear up paper. I live in fear that I will carelessly leave some important document, notice, or (heaven forbid) check lying within his reach. And, his reach? Well, for a little short, 7 pounder, he has amazing vertical jumping abilities. He has munched on tv guides, notes with lists, cell phone instructions, and magazines. this morning, because he could find nothing else, he leisurely tore into a cardboard box that was under the couch.
I've tried spanking (I can't catch him), scolding him (he just barks sassily back at me), re-directing his energy with a toy (He looks at me like he can't believe I'm using that tactic), and ignoring him. the last way has been the most successful because he DOES love an audience.
I have Charlie because I saw a stranger in LOWE's with Molly at her side. Molly was so sweet, cuddly, and soft. She only came over to me because her mistress allowed her to. I was impressed. My husband let me have one for our 32nd anniversary. And, I have thoroughly enjoyed Charlie. He is precious, but I was not prepared (I failed to check out the positives and negatives of Yorkies) for his excitement wetting or his high energy level. I do look at it positively though. I figure I'm saving on gym fees because Charlie keeps my heart pumping and my level of exercise has increased from running after him and from him.
